FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky State Police is accepting applications for Cadet Class 108, offering a starting salary of $71,000 and several new incentives aimed at recruiting troopers.

Gov. Andy Beshear and KSP announced Tuesday that applications are open through Oct. 15 for the class, which is scheduled to begin in May 2027.

According to the agency, new troopers will be eligible for 100 hours of overtime, additional federally funded overtime opportunities and, for the first time, mileage reimbursement while attending the academy.

Cadets will also complete a revamped 22-week training curriculum that includes extended weekend breaks and earlier entry into the workforce.

“If you are passionate about protecting communities across our state, join Team Kentucky and together let’s continue moving our commonwealth forward,” Beshear said.

Cadets without prior law enforcement experience will receive more than 1,000 hours of classroom and field instruction, including training in constitutional law, criminal investigations, crisis response, traffic and juvenile laws, community relations, first aid and weapons use.

“The Kentucky State Police Academy is more than training. It is where people take the first real step toward a career of purpose, service and opportunity,” Recruitment Branch Commander Capt. Charles Hedgespeth said.

Candidates selected from posts 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 14 will receive guaranteed assignments to their home posts. Other applicants will be assigned to their home post or a neighboring post based on agency needs.

The academy also allows cadets to earn an associate of applied science degree while completing training. Since the program began in 2017, 150 cadets have earned degrees.
