ATF seizes explosive tank shell from Cave City apartment

CAVE CITY, Ky. — Authorities responded to Glenwood Apartments Monday after a resident asked police to determine whether an item he purchased could still be dangerous.
Cave City Police Chief Paul Reynolds said officers learned the man had purchased the device at a flea market one to two years ago. Reynolds described the device as a “tank shell.”
“It was probably 4-foot tall like a massive bullet,” Reynolds said. “It’s considered a bomb, I guess.”
Reynolds said the resident wanted to know whether the device was stable. Officers responded, took pictures and sent them to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for review.
An Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit from Fort Campbell later responded to the apartment complex.
Reynolds said the device was determined to contain explosive material and was seized by authorities.
He said authorities will ensure the device is safely detonated.
