GLASGOW, Ky. — The Glasgow YMCA will remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, following an early-morning fire Wednesday that was contained to one room but caused smoke and water damage.

The fire happened in the cardio room at the YMCA, located at 1 YMCA Way, according to Glasgow Fire Chief Lucas Tinsley.

The Glasgow Fire Department responded to a fire alarm activation at approximately 3:09 a.m. Sept. 30.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw flames coming from a window at the front of the building. Crews broke the window near the flames and extinguished the fire.

The building’s sprinkler system helped prevent the fire from spreading before firefighters arrived. The fire, along with most of the smoke and water damage, was contained to the room where it started, according to the fire department.

Firefighters remained on scene for just over an hour. The Glasgow Police Department and Barren-Metcalfe EMS also assisted.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

The YMCA announced Wednesday that professional remediation crews will work around the clock to prepare the facility for a safe reopening Monday morning.

The YMCA’s full-day childcare and afterschool areas were not affected and will remain open during normal business hours.

All other areas of the facility are currently inaccessible and will remain closed during remediation.

The YMCA thanked its members and the community for their support and understanding during the temporary closure.
