GLASGOW, Ky. — The Glasgow Police Department has undergone some reorganization following the retirement of Major Terry Flatt.

Flatt, a 14-year veteran of the department, retired Sept. 1 after 27 years in law enforcement. Department and city leaders recognized him Monday evening and presented him with an honorary gift.

“He has been a tremendous asset to the police department. He would do anything at the drop of a hat. He’s easy to get ahold of, and he’s going to be missed,” Chief Guy Howie said.

Flatt was hired by former Glasgow Police Chief Horace Johnson. Before joining the department, he worked for other law enforcement agencies, including the Radcliff Police Department, Howie said.

Flatt retired as a major, a position one step below the chief, and served as the department’s primary spokesperson.

“He’s caused a big kerfuffle in the department,” Howie said jokingly.

Following Flatt’s recognition, Howie announced several changes within the department to members of the Glasgow City Council.

New school resource officer

Officer Brian Jones was introduced as the department’s newest officer. He will serve as the school resource officer at Glasgow Middle School.

Howie said Jones is a veteran who served in Iraq. He spent 10 years with the Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement branch and another 10 years with the Western Kentucky University Police Department.

Jones has been married for 19 years and has three sons, one of whom is a student at Glasgow Middle School.

Promotions

Howie also announced the promotions of Steven Fields and Jabin McGuire to captain. Both previously served as lieutenants.

The bottom line

Flatt’s retirement has led to changes within the Glasgow Police Department, including the addition of Brian Jones as the Glasgow Middle School resource officer and promotions for Steven Fields and Jabin McGuire.
