GLASGOW, Ky. — A two-year investigation disrupted a major drug trafficking organization and prevented large quantities of illegal drugs from reaching the region, Barren River Drug Task Force Director Ron Lafferty told magistrates Tuesday.

The investigation, which concluded last year, resulted in the seizure of more than 100 pounds of methamphetamine, 25 kilograms of cocaine, fentanyl pills and about 60 pounds of marijuana.

Lafferty shared details of the case during a presentation to Barren Fiscal Court, saying it reflects the task force’s focus on targeting mid- and upper-level drug traffickers.

“We’re going after the bigger players and taking them out the best we can,” Lafferty said.

While the overall number of cases has declined in recent years, Lafferty said the amount of drugs seized has increased significantly as investigators focus on larger trafficking organizations.

The FBI led the investigation with assistance from local, state and federal agencies.

Lafferty said officers spent hours conducting surveillance, including following suspected traffickers to the West Coast before tracking them back to Kentucky.

“We ended up stopping over 100 lbs of meth that was coming into our area,” he said. “Twenty-five kilos of cocaine we seized and fentanyl pills. I think there was 60 lbs of marijuana. It was a ton of stuff that was coming in by the one organization to our area.”

Lafferty said the task force has not released additional details about the case because the FBI remains the lead agency.

“Don’t think we’re not doing anything. We are,” he said. “On a grander scale, we can’t really release everything until everything is said and done.”

The Barren River Drug Task Force is a partnership among Glasgow, Cave City, Barren County and Metcalfe County. The agency has operated for 23 years and investigates mid- and upper-level drug traffickers.
