FRANKFORT, Ky. — Flags at Kentucky state office buildings will be lowered to half-staff Monday in observance of Overdose Awareness Day.

Gov. Andy Beshear ordered the flags to be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Aug. 31. The Executive Mansion will also be lit purple Monday, the color associated with overdose awareness.

Overdose Awareness Day is observed each year on Aug. 31 to raise awareness about drug overdoses, reduce the stigma surrounding drug-related deaths and recognize the grief experienced by families and friends who have lost loved ones to overdose.

“As we recognize Overdose Awareness Day here in the commonwealth, we remember those we have lost, offer support to their families and stand with those still struggling,” Beshear said. “We’ve made a lot of progress, but we know there is always more to do. One life lost to overdose is one too many. And we’re committed to continuing this progress until that number gets to zero.”

Flags across Kentucky are already at half-staff in honor of Dolly Parton.

Beshear encouraged individuals, businesses and organizations to also lower their flags Monday in recognition of Overdose Awareness Day.
