GLASGOW, Ky. — Marshall Reid Bailey, a longtime Barren County business owner and community leader whose career included more than five decades in the local automobile business, died Thursday at age 89.

Bailey was remembered as a businessman, builder, community volunteer and father whose work touched many parts of the Glasgow community.

Bailey’s career in the automobile business began with Peterson Buick Pontiac, where his interest in cars and strong sales instincts helped shape what would become a decades-long career.

He later joined with Danny Gibson to build Bailey-Gibson Buick Pontiac GMC, a dealership that served local customers for more than 50 years.

Bailey also served as president of the Kentucky Auto Dealers Association.

His work extended beyond the dealership, according to his obituary.

Bailey built and remodeled more than 100 homes in the local area and developed the Ritter Chase neighborhood, named in honor of his wife’s family.

His involvement in the community included service with the Barren County Chamber of Commerce and participation in the Rotary Club. He was also an active member of Glasgow Baptist Church.

Those who knew Bailey also remembered his willingness to help people in need.

Following the death of his wife, Carol, in 2005, Bailey partnered with Dr. Bharat Mody to establish the Carol Bailey Memorial Golf Tournament.

The tournament continues today and raises money to help community members who need assistance with medical care.

Bailey’s family described him as someone who found joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Paul and Lucille Matthews Bailey of Temple Hill and the last surviving member of the “Bailey Boys,” which included brothers Bobby, Danny, Joe and Marshall.

Bailey attended Temple Hill High School before marrying Carol Ritter. The couple later moved to Fort Hood, Texas, where Bailey served in the U.S. Army. During his military service, he was stationed on base with Elvis Presley.

Bailey later remarried Patty Dickson in 2014. She also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his daughters, Maria Bailey of Glasgow and Angela Greenfield and her husband, Mark, of Bloomington, Indiana; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other family members.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Glasgow Baptist Church, with burial to follow at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Military honors will be provided at Glasgow DAV Chapter #20.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations to the TJ Community Mission Foundation.
