FRANKFORT, Ky. — Metcalfe and Cumberland counties are among at least 20 Kentucky counties approved for federal Public Assistance following deadly flooding in June, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Wednesday.

The federal assistance follows flooding that affected parts of Kentucky from June 17-30. Some areas received more than 8 inches of rain in a short period, and six Kentuckians died in the severe weather event, according to Beshear’s office.

The Public Assistance designation is available to Metcalfe and Cumberland counties, as well as Bullitt, Butler, Clinton, Garrard, Grayson, Green, Hardin, Henderson, Jackson, Jessamine, Madison, Meade, Mercer, Ohio, Owsley, Rockcastle, Spencer and Wayne counties.

“This flooding event was devastating for our state, and Team Kentucky worked quickly to conduct damage assessments and request federal aid so that Kentuckians and communities affected would have the support needed to recover and rebuild,” Beshear said.

The assistance was approved after Beshear requested federal aid from President Donald Trump and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Public Assistance program provides federal assistance to eligible communities following disasters. The governor’s announcement did not provide a breakdown of how much funding will be available to Metcalfe or Cumberland counties.
