GLASGOW, Ky. — Before her death made national news, Tasia Fortune was a student and athlete in Barren County, where a former classmate remembers her as someone who was always laughing.

Fortune, 29, was found dead Aug. 3 hanging from a tree in the yard of an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi. Authorities are investigating her death as a murder.

Her relatives told the Associated Press that Fortune had lived in Jackson for nearly 10 years and was originally from Kentucky. She had four children, according to a GoFundMe organized by her family.

More than $181,000 had been raised through the fundraiser as of Wednesday.

The fundraiser says Fortune’s funeral expenses have been covered, with remaining funds intended to help her family with expenses related to the case, including travel to court, lodging and lost wages.

“Tasia Sidea was so much more than the way her life ended,” her mother, Christy Spivey, wrote on the GoFundMe. “She was our daughter. She was someone who was loved, someone who mattered, and someone whose life touched the people around her.”

Fortune was in Kentucky’s foster care system as a teenager, according to Mississippi Today. Her time in Barren County dates to her teenage years.

Barrenside confirmed with Barren County High School that she attended the school until November 2013, when she transferred to Muhlenberg County High School. She participated in athletics while at Barren County.

A Muhlenberg County school official confirmed Fortune attended there until March 2014 before transferring to another Kentucky school district.

Jacoby Botts, a 2015 Barren County High School graduate, remembered Fortune as a fun person who was always laughing.

That personality also comes through in the pages of Barren County High School’s 2013 Trojan yearbook.

In one photo, Fortune stands beside a teacher while doing a dance. A Q&A beside the photo asks about the craziest thing a teacher had done in class.

“A teacher stood up on the counter and did the dougie,” Fortune said.

Fortune was also a cross-country runner. Her obituary described her as a “star cross country athlete,” while the 2014 Trojan yearbook lists her as a member of the school’s cross-country team.

Police have not disclosed a motive in her death, according to the Associated Press.

Police arrested a second man Tuesday in connection to her death. A third suspect has an active warrant, but police have not publicly identified the person.

Spivey told reporters that her daughter had struggled with homelessness in recent years and that she was unsure where Fortune was living at the time of her death.

Spivey said the last time they talked, Fortune spoke about starting a cleaning business and trying to get her life in order.

In her message to supporters, Spivey asked people to remember her daughter beyond the circumstances of her death.

“If you knew Tasia, please share a memory of her,” Spivey wrote. “If you didn’t know her, please remember that behind every headline and every court case is a human life — a daughter who was loved and a family who will carry her loss for the rest of their lives.”
