GLASGOW, Ky. — Barren County officials appointed Bethany Steenbergen to the county’s opioid committee Tuesday, taking another step toward deciding how local opioid settlement funds will be spent.

Communities across Kentucky have begun receiving opioid abatement funds from nationwide settlements with opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies.

The money is intended to support addiction prevention, treatment and recovery efforts, according to the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission.

Judge/Executive Jamie Byrd said the committee will review funding requests and make recommendations on how the county’s share of the money should be allocated. She said the county plans to establish an application process and distribute funds once each year.

The committee includes the county judge/executive, sheriff, jailer, county attorney, two magistrates and one citizen-at-large.

The committee is expected to host its first meeting in July.
