GLASGOW, Ky. — The Barren County Family YMCA’s main facility will remain closed through Wednesday as cleanup and remediation work continues following an early-morning fire that damaged a room and caused smoke and water damage.

The YMCA announced Sunday that it plans to reopen the main facility Thursday, Oct. 8, following the completion of remediation and cleaning work and clearance to safely reopen.

The fire broke out around 3:09 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the cardio room at the YMCA, located at 1 YMCA Way, according to Glasgow Fire Chief Lucas Tinsley.

YMCA to remain closed until Monday after contained fire
Fire crews responded to a fire alarm activation at the YMCA, located at 1 YMCA Way, at approximately 3:09 a.m. Sept. 30.

When firefighters arrived, they saw flames coming from a window at the front of the building. Crews broke the window near the flames and extinguished the fire.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

The YMCA initially planned to reopen Monday, Oct. 5, but later extended the closure as professional remediation crews continued working to clean the facility.

The YMCA’s childcare center remains open and is operating normally because it is located in a separate section of the building that was not affected by the fire.

Families needing childcare during fall break should enter through the childcare entrance. Families who have not yet registered can get help with registration when they arrive.

The YMCA’s phone lines will not be monitored during the closure because of ongoing remediation work and limited access to the main facility.

Senior meals continue

Senior meals will continue Monday through Wednesday as to-go meals.

Meals can be picked up at the YMCA’s childcare entrance from 11 to 11:30 a.m.

Fitness options move to other locations

YMCA members can continue accessing fitness services while the main facility is closed.

Extreme Fitness has opened its doors to YMCA members during the closure.

YMCA group fitness classes have also moved to First Christian Church at 1100 N. Race St. in Glasgow.

Classes scheduled Monday through Wednesday include yoga, SilverSneakers, strength and stretching classes, Pilates, line dancing and other fitness programs.

The YMCA said the temporary schedule is intended to help members continue their routines while cleanup continues.

The organization thanked its members, staff, First Christian Church, Extreme Fitness, community partners and others for their patience and support during the closure.

The YMCA plans to reopen its main facility Thursday, Oct. 8.
