Candidates assigned ballot order in Barren County election drawing
Kentucky law required the ballot drawing be held at 2 p.m. local time across the state. Several candidates were not present, though attendance was not required.
GLASGOW, Ky. — Candidates in Barren County learned their placement on the November ballot following a public drawing conducted Thursday by the county clerk’s office, setting the order voters will see names this fall.
The drawing assigns a number to each candidate in contested races, determining ballot order for the Nov. 3 general election.
County Clerk Helena Birdwell was joined by Mike Harris and Pat Scott, party representatives on the Barren County Board of Elections, along with Election Coordinator Ashton Harrison and County Attorney Mike Richardson.
Richardson conducted the drawing, which used a new process adopted from Daviess County. Under the system, candidate names were placed in plastic capsules, mixed in a bag, and drawn to determine ballot order.

Candidates who were present had their names drawn first in order, with each draw assigning the next available ballot position. After all present candidates were placed, the remaining names of those not in attendance were placed back into the bag and drawn to fill the remaining positions.
Kentucky law required the ballot drawing be held at 2 p.m. local time across the state. Several candidates were not present, though attendance was not required.
City offices and school board elections are nonpartisan, meaning candidates do not run under a political party affiliation. These races are generally limited to specific geographic areas, such as the Glasgow City Council and mayoral race, which are open only to residents within the city limits.
