GLASGOW, Ky. — A former Barren County substitute teacher has pleaded guilty to second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor and was sentenced to three years of supervised pretrial diversion, according to court records.

Krystal Sims, 31, of Cave City, was arrested in October after the Barren County Sheriff’s Office received information that she had communicated with a juvenile in an attempt to arrange a sexual encounter.

According to investigators, the juvenile told police Sims was his substitute teacher and that she had sent him a friend request on Snapchat. Court records also allege Sims arranged to meet the juvenile in Cave City for sex and exposed herself during a video call.

Deputies said Sims admitted to being the female in a recorded call but stated she agreed to meet the student so he could apologize for “the way he acted in class,” according to a citation. Sims also said she did not meet with the juvenile and that nothing physical occurred between them.

Sims was originally charged with procuring or promoting the use of a minor by electronic means, a Class C felony.

As part of the plea agreement, Sims was sentenced to three years of supervised pretrial diversion. If successfully completed, the diversion would allow her to avoid jail time.

Court records show her fines and court costs were waived, and she is prohibited from substitute teaching or teaching during the diversion period.

She must also undergo a mental health assessment and “truthfully inform the provider of the nature and circumstances of the charge against her,” and comply with any recommended counseling.
