GLASGOW, Ky. — Johnny Belcher, one of 18 candidates who advanced to the November election for Glasgow City Council, died Friday.

Belcher, 71, was one of 23 candidates who ran in the city’s May primary election.

He finished among the candidates advancing to the general election, where voters are scheduled to select nine members of the Glasgow City Council.

Barren County Clerk Helena Birdwell said Saturday she does not yet know whether Belcher’s name must remain on the November ballot. Belcher was drawn 17th in the June 4 ballot-order drawing, which determined the order of the 18 candidates.

Birdwell said she plans to contact the Kentucky Secretary of State’s Office next week to determine how Belcher’s death will affect the race and the November ballot.

The circumstances surrounding Belcher’s death were not immediately available.

Belcher was a longtime educator in Barren County. He began his career as a teacher and head football coach at Caverna High School before becoming a guidance counselor and golf coach at Glasgow High School, where he worked until his retirement.

He also was involved in local youth golf programs, including the Boys & Girls Club and a program he founded called Tee-to-Green.

Funeral services for Belcher are scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
