GLASGOW, Ky. — After more than a year of construction, the Bounty of the Barrens farmers market is set to open at its new location this weekend.

Sustainable Glasgow, the nonprofit that operates the market, said a soft opening will begin Saturday at 8 a.m., following the start of the group’s fifth annual Homegrown 5K at 7:30 a.m.

“There will still be some finishing touches that the builders need to apply to the building before we can call it fully completed,” said Griffin Botts, executive director of Sustainable Glasgow.

The new location sits along West Main Street beside the post office and adjacent to an active construction site where a new judicial center is under construction.

Funding for the project came from a mix of state agriculture grants and local government matching funds. Concentric Corp. of America, which oversees Staco Construction Inc., has been handling construction on the project.

Botts said shoppers can expect a familiar experience despite the change in setting.

“It will still be the same Bounty of the Barrens experience folks have come to know and love tomorrow, just in our new home,” he said. “We are expecting some growing pains, especially with the special event taking place.”

The market features vendors from Barren and surrounding counties offering locally produced goods, including fresh produce, meats, eggs, baked items and handmade products.

Saturday’s opening coincides with one of the organization’s signature events, which is expected to draw additional visitors downtown as runners take part in the annual 5K.

Organizers say the market plays an important role in supporting local agriculture and small businesses while giving residents access to fresh, locally sourced foods.
