GLASGOW, Ky. — Barren County is among 18 Kentucky counties approved for federal disaster assistance related to a severe winter storm that struck the state in January, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Sunday.

The approval from President Donald Trump and the Federal Emergency Management Agency allows eligible local governments and certain nonprofit organizations to seek reimbursement for storm-related expenses.

The January storm brought significant ice accumulation, heavy snowfall and dangerously cold temperatures across Kentucky. Some areas received up to 9 inches of snow.

Barren County was included alongside Allen, Clay, Clinton, Cumberland, Jackson, Laurel, Lee, McCreary, Menifee, Metcalfe, Monroe, Owsley, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell, Wayne and Whitley.

Beshear said the federal approval will help affected communities continue recovery efforts from the winter weather event.
