GLASGOW, Ky. — Barren County leaders are expected to keep the county’s property tax rate at 12.2 cents per $100 of assessed value for the 2026-27 fiscal year, according to a resolution obtained by Barrenside ahead of Tuesday’s fiscal court meeting.

The proposed rate is the same one adopted last year and is higher than the county’s 12.0-cent compensating rate.

Property values rise as Barren County weighs 12.2-cent tax rate
The fiscal court must vote before the property tax rate is finalized.

The compensating rate, calculated by the state, would generate about $3.84 million in property tax revenue. The 12.2-cent rate is expected to generate about $3.90 million, roughly $64,000 more.

The county’s taxable property base increased by about $176.8 million from 2025 to 2026, meaning the county can collect more property tax revenue even though the tax rate remains unchanged.

County leaders previously said the additional revenue will help cover rising costs, including jail expenses and other routine county expenditures.

The proposed rate is also 2.1 cents lower than the county’s 2015 rate of 14.3 cents per $100.

Because the 12.2-cent rate is higher than the compensating rate, the county must follow the state’s requirements for adopting the higher rate. A public hearing was held Aug. 21.

Fiscal court members are expected to vote on the proposed rate Tuesday.
