GLASGOW, Ky. — Two Barren County educators were recognized Monday by Western Kentucky University as recipients of the university’s Distinguished Educator Award during surprise ceremonies held at their schools.

The awards are presented annually by WKU’s College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and recognize educators across the region for excellence in teaching, leadership, innovation and service to students.

According to a release from Barren County Schools, Hughes was surprised alongside fellow teachers and students as WKU representatives announced the honor.

District officials said Hughes is known for her dedication to student learning and for creating a nurturing classroom environment throughout her career.

Boggs was recognized for her work in visual and performing arts education, including helping students build confidence and self-expression through the arts.

Both ceremonies included presentations from WKU representatives, district leaders, school staff and students.

“We are incredibly proud of Debra and Shelby for this well-deserved recognition,” Superintendent Amy Irwin said in the release. “They represent the very best of Barren County Schools through their passion for students, commitment to excellence, and the lasting impact they make every single day.
