Candidates for Cave City, Park City and school board offices must file by June 2
Those interested in filing for office can contact their local county clerk’s office for additional information.
GLASGOW, Ky. — Candidates seeking certain local and nonpartisan offices, including school board seats and some city positions, have until June 2 to file for placement on the November general election ballot.
According to the Kentucky State Board of Elections, nonpartisan candidates and eligible independent candidates must submit nomination papers and other required filing documents by 4 p.m. on June 2.
In Barren County, the deadline applies to candidates seeking seats on the Cave City Council, Cave City mayor, Park City Commission, Park City mayor, local school boards and soil and water conservation district offices, according to Barren County Clerk Helena Birdwell.
Birdwell said Cave City and Park City waive their city primaries through local ordinances, allowing those races to go directly onto the November general election ballot. Glasgow, by contrast, holds city elections that require candidates to file earlier through Kentucky’s primary election process.
The following school board seats are up for election this year:
- Barren County Board of Education District 1, currently held by Mike Miller
- Barren County Board of Education District 3, currently held by Joey Newberry
- Three at-large seats on the Caverna Independent Schools Board of Education currently held by Allison Dennison, Gina Lyon and Jennifer Ballard
- Three at-large seats on the Glasgow Independent Schools Board of Education currently held by Dr. Barret Lessenberry, Dr. William Thornbury and Reginald Hayden
Unlike Barren County Schools, which elects board members by geographic district, Caverna and Glasgow elect board members at-large, meaning candidates run districtwide rather than representing a specific geographic division.
Candidates who filed earlier this year for partisan races entered Kentucky’s primary election process for offices such as the state legislature, countywide positions and other party-affiliated races.
Kentucky State Board of Elections General Counsel Taylor Brown said independent candidates seeking partisan offices outside the primary process, such as sheriff or county judge/executive, were required to file a statement of candidacy by April 1 in order to qualify for the ballot.
Separate deadlines apply to write-in candidates, who must file by Aug. 24.
Those interested in filing for office can contact their local county clerk’s office for additional information.
