GLASGOW, Ky. — A community fundraiser aimed at fighting childhood hunger in Barren County will return this weekend as local supporters prepare to take part in the annual “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” event hosted by BC Reads & Feeds.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at 8 a.m. in Glasgow.

Participants will begin assembling at 7:30 a.m. for pre-registration before stepping off at the Veterans Memorial Wall at the corner of South Race Street and South Public Square.

The walk will conclude at First Christian Church at 1100 N. Race Street.

Organizers with BC Reads & Feeds say the walk is designed to raise awareness and support for local students facing food insecurity.

According to event materials, roughly 1 in 4 students may not know where their next meal is coming from when school is not in session.

The organization highlighted the scale of its recent impact, reporting more than 451,500 total meals served, along with 3,500 weekend food bags distributed and more than 3,000 books placed into the hands of children.

Officials also noted that over 70 summer feeding workers helped serve more than 448,000 non-congregate meals across five rural elementary school sites.

Participants are encouraged to consider that while there are roughly 2,000 steps in a mile, last year’s event saw about 400 walkers collectively take an estimated 800,000 steps in support of the cause.

Organizers say the walk is part of a broader mission to ensure children in Barren County have consistent access to food throughout the year, especially on weekends and during school breaks.
