GLASGOW, Ky. — Bright yellow mums are bringing a touch of autumn to downtown Glasgow, where Garden Club members refreshed planters near the Square on Friday.

Glenda Eaton and Brandi Turner replaced older plants with the vibrant fall flowers in planters along South Green Street, just off the Square. Barren Wholesale Greenhouse donated the mums for the seasonal update.

The effort also offered a chance for younger gardeners to lend a hand. Before the new flowers went in, Rory Chambers, Floyd Chambers and Tilly Chambers helped prepare the planters by pulling weeds and removing old plants.

Organized in 1933 and federated in 1937, the Glasgow Garden Club carries out projects throughout the year to beautify the community and promote gardening.

Among its projects, members maintain plants and floral containers at T.J. Regional Health, the Museum of the Barrens and throughout downtown Glasgow.

The club also partners with local health facilities to provide garden therapy, supports Kentucky students, recognizes Barren County residents for their efforts to maintain attractive yards and gardens, and promotes monarch butterfly waystations.

The club generally meets at 5 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except January and February. Meetings are held at the Lera B. Mitchell Clubhouse, located at 1214 S. Green St. in Glasgow.
