FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Department of Education is reminding families that free meals will be available to children across the state this summer through the Summer Food Service Program, also known as Sun Meals.

The program provides meals at no cost to children 18 and younger in low-income areas from late May through August while school is out of session.

According to KDE, more than 2,000 meal sites will operate statewide this summer through partnerships with school districts and community organizations. In addition to meals, many locations also offer recreational and educational activities for children.

KDE said participation in the program has grown each year as awareness of the service has increased.

In some rural areas like Barren County, meals may be distributed for multiple days at a time and, in certain cases, offered “to go” for children, parents or guardians.

Meal site locations and service times vary across Kentucky.

Families can find nearby meal sites and distribution information through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Meals for Kids Site Finder or by calling the USDA Hunger Hotline at (866) 348-6479.

The Summer Food Service Program is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
