GLASGOW, Ky. — Planning and zoning officials are expected to review a rezoning request Monday that would pave the way for a new recreational facility on Columbia Avenue next to the Boys & Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County.

The application, filed by Houchens Center for Children Inc., seeks to rezone approximately 2.4 acres at 801 Columbia Ave. from R-1 (Low Density Residential) to B-2 (General Business).

The overall property spans about 6.7 acres, though most of it is already zoned B-2.

The proposed facility, known as the Guilfoil Recreation Center at the Craft Innovation Center, would be located adjacent to the Boys & Girls Club.

Director of Operations Wade Copas said the club has lacked dedicated space for sports and recreation since relocating from the Housing Authority of Glasgow HERO Center on Cheatham Street in 2023.

Copas described the proposed facility as a large, single-story building that would include at least two middle school-sized basketball courts, batting cages, classroom space and a stage area.

He said the center would allow the club to expand programming and restore sports activities that have been limited since the move.

“We’re pretty happy about it,” Copas said. “It should be the crown jewel of what we do. This is very exciting for us as a club.”

The project is being funded by Kelly and Joe Craft, longtime benefactors of the local Boys & Girls Club. The Guilfoil name is a nod to Kelly Craft’s maiden name.

Copas said construction is expected to take about a year once the necessary zoning approvals are in place. A groundbreaking ceremony could take place as early as mid- to late summer.

Once completed, the facility will primarily serve Boys & Girls Club members.

However, Copas said club leaders have discussed making the space available to the broader community when it is not being used for programming, potentially allowing groups to rent it for meetings, events and other activities.

“This is not only going to be beneficial for us but the entire community,” he said.
