GLASGOW, Ky. — While summer can be a slower season for Main Street businesses, tourism officials hope a new community initiative this weekend will help draw shoppers downtown and encourage support for small businesses across Barren County.

The initiative, called “Paint the Town Yellow,” is organized by the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist & Convention Commission and is intended to promote local shopping through themed promotions and events.

Landry Steenbergen, communications coordinator with the tourism office, said the concept is designed to counter the typical summer slowdown for local retailers.

“We're trying to remedy that almost and have people excited to come out and shop and do all of the things Glasgow has to offer,” she said.

Steenbergen said many businesses are taking part in their own ways, including discounts tied to yellow tags, themed displays, and yellow-inspired specials such as lemonade, candy and other seasonal items.

“Each business can kind of put their own spin on it, so that you're getting a different experience everywhere you go,” she said.

The event runs Friday and Saturday. On Friday, BRAWA will be at the tourism office from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with golden puppies and dogs for residents to visit.

Steenbergen said the tourism office will also provide shopping guides and information on participating businesses for visitors stopping by.

A full list of participating locations will be posted on the tourism commission’s Facebook page.
