GLASGOW, Ky. — A Fountain Run man is facing multiple charges after police say he stole a work truck from a Glasgow business and later ditched its trailer and identifying markings during a multi-county investigation.

The Glasgow Police Department said officers responded to MCS Lawncare on South Lewis Street on Sunday after a stolen vehicle report was made.

According to police, the owner said a man climbed under a fence at about 1:18 a.m. on April 25 and left the property in a 2021 white Dodge 3500 pickup truck bearing MCS Lawncare markings, along with a trailer carrying a water tank.

Investigators said Flock camera footage later showed the vehicle traveling along West Main Street toward New Bowling Green Road around 11:30 p.m. The truck was later seen in Fountain Run on April 26 by a Flock camera at about 9:30 a.m. and noon, at which point the business wrap had been removed.

The owner also reported the trailer appeared to have been damaged, seemingly “jackknifed” after it was taken.

The stolen vehicle was later located along Capitol Hill Road in Fountain Run by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Barren County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police.

According to an arrest citation, Aiden Matthew Birdwell, 18, of Fountain Run admitted to taking the truck. He reportedly told investigators he had been drinking and was left without a ride after a trip to Walmart in Glasgow, before walking through the city and onto South Lewis Street.

Birdwell told police he saw a gap in the fence, climbed under it, and found an unlocked truck with a key fob inside, which he then used to drive away. He said the gate opened automatically as he left the lot.

The citation states that while driving, the trailer’s water tank fell off near Payne Mill Road and Oil Well Road. Birdwell later disconnected the trailer and left it in a ditch after deciding he did not know what to do with it.

He also admitted to removing the MCS Lawncare wrap and discarding it at a Dollar General in Fountain Run, and continued driving the truck. Birdwell told police he considered returning the vehicle but feared the consequences after altering it.

“Birdwell advised he stole the truck because he was drunk and needed a ride home,” the citation said.

Birdwell was charged with third-degree burglary, theft by unlawful taking of an automobile valued between $10,000 and $1,000,000, first-degree criminal mischief, operating without a license, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was arrested by Officer Micah Janes of the Glasgow Police Department with assistance from multiple agencies and transported to the Glasgow Police Department.
