GLASGOW, Ky. — The Barren County Sheriff’s Office is reminding parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s online activity during summer break, warning that internet predators often target children when school is out.

In a social media post, the sheriff’s office said children typically spend more time online during the summer while many parents and guardians are at work or otherwise occupied, creating opportunities for online predators.

The agency encouraged parents to stay involved in their children’s digital lives by knowing which apps, games and websites they use and by having regular conversations about online safety.

Officials also recommended parents review privacy settings and parental controls on electronic devices and encourage children to report any online interactions that make them feel uncomfortable or involve requests for personal information.

“A few simple conversations and regular monitoring can go a long way in helping keep our children safe,” the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office also urged anyone who suspects suspicious online activity involving a child to contact their local law enforcement agency immediately.
