GLASGOW, Ky. — Western Kentucky University in Glasgow honored its Class of 2026 graduates April 30 during its annual graduand ceremony, according to a press release from WKU.

The event recognized students who have completed all academic requirements for their degrees but have not yet formally had their awards conferred.

The ceremony highlighted several students, including Lauren Bowman, who received the Juanita Bayless Award; Rachel Shirley, who earned the Spirit Award; and Payton Wheeler, who was presented the Scholar Award, according to the release.

Dr. Derick Strode, director of WKU regional campuses, welcomed attendees and offered brief remarks. Chris Houchens of Commonwealth Broadcasting served as emcee, while Bryan Baysinger spoke on behalf of WKU Alumni, the release stated.

A longstanding Glasgow campus tradition, graduates were presented with tartan stoles to wear during commencement ceremonies on WKU’s main campus.

The tartans reflect Glasgow’s Scottish heritage and distinguish regional campus graduates, according to the release. Each student selected a WKU in Glasgow faculty or staff member to present their stole during the ceremony.

Following the program, graduates were treated to commemorative cakes and WKU Alumni grad packs, with families taking photos alongside students and appearances by Big Red adding a lighthearted moment, the release said.

The event was held in the Community Room at The Pavilion, provided by T.J. Regional Health.

WKU commencement exercises are scheduled for Thursday, May 7, on the university’s main campus, where degrees will be officially conferred.

Graduates will also be recognized during their College Recognition Ceremony on Friday, May 8, according to the release.
