Traffic signal removed at Race and Front streets in Glasgow

GLASGOW, Ky. — A traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. 31-EX and Front Street in Glasgow was removed Wednesday after a state evaluation determined the intersection should remain an all-way stop.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet completed its evaluation of the intersection, which is also known as Race Street and Front Street, in Barren County.

The signal was switched to flashing red in April when the evaluation began. Stop signs and message boards were installed to alert drivers to the change.

Why the signal is being removed

The evaluation was prompted by a utility company moving lines to new poles. That work would have required the traffic signals to be relocated.

Glasgow signal under review but records show likely outcome
In a February 2026 memorandum, district traffic engineers requested approval to study, and ultimately remove, the signal, stating the intersection could be converted to an all-way stop.

Before the evaluation began, preliminary traffic data showed vehicle counts at the intersection no longer met federal guidelines for a traffic signal.

The full evaluation confirmed the preliminary findings and determined an all-way stop would meet traffic flow needs.

The Transportation Cabinet said it will continue to monitor traffic conditions at the intersection to make sure the all-way stop provides safe and efficient traffic flow.
