Welcome to Barrenside
People deserve to understand not just what is happening but why it matters. That's why I created Barrenside.
What you need to know:
- Journalist Brennan Crain has launched a new independent local news platform called Barrenside after seven years in local reporting, including work at WCLU Radio and WBKO-TV.
- Barrenside is built as a community-rooted journalism outlet focused on South Central Kentucky, aiming to go beyond traditional news coverage with storytelling, engagement, and events.
- The mission emphasizes fair, accurate, and contextual reporting that helps audiences understand not just what is happening, but why it matters.
- The platform is designed to be a “place-based” news source, reflecting the broader region rather than being limited by county lines.
- Barrenside will include both free essential news and deeper reporting supported by optional paid patron subscriptions at multiple tiers.
- Crain says the goal is to strengthen local journalism in a time of declining trust in news and shrinking local news coverage, while keeping public-interest reporting free and accessible.
After several teases over the last few months, I'm excited to welcome you to what's next for me: Barrenside.
Seven years ago, I started covering local news from a small newsroom inside WCLU Radio on West Main Street in Glasgow, Kentucky. Just a few days ago, I finished three years of work at WBKO-TV in Bowling Green.
That work took me across the region, into courtrooms, onto fire scenes, inside schools and city halls, telling the stories that shape life here in South Central Kentucky.
Now, I’m building something new.
Something independent. Something rooted right here at home.
I’m Brennan Crain, and welcome to Barrenside.
Many of you already know me or have followed my work over the years from social media. No matter where I’ve been, one thing has stayed the same: I’ve always been a newshound.
I believe in journalism. I believe in doing it the right way. And I believe communities deserve strong, fair, and honest reporting.
But Barrenside is meant to be more than a news outlet.
It’s a platform built from a place, not limited by it.
The name comes from Barren County, but it represents something broader: a vantage point rooted in South Central Kentucky, looking outward at the stories, ideas and people shaping this region.
More than news
Barrenside is built with a simple mission: serve people first with compassion, intelligence, and integrity.
That means reporting the truth clearly, responsibly and without unnecessary spin.
It means asking questions, providing context and helping people understand what’s happening around them.

But it also means creating something more dynamic.
Our mission is to deliver thoughtful, community-rooted journalism that elevates local voices, holds power accountable and sparks curiosity, inviting South Central Kentucky to explore, question and engage with the stories that shape their lives.
Barrenside is intended to be:
- A trusted source of news and information
- A place for thoughtful storytelling and deeper reporting
- A platform that responds to the needs and questions of the community
- A space where ideas can be explored, shared and challenged
That includes not just traditional reporting, but modern storytelling, community engagement and events that bring people into the conversation, not just as readers, but as participants.
Barrenside
This won’t be limited to one county line. The stories we tell and the conversations we start will reflect the broader region and the people who live here.
Because community doesn’t stop at a border, and neither should coverage.
Why Barrenside?
We’re living in a time when trust in news is low, misinformation spreads quickly and local coverage is shrinking.
The need for reliable, contextual journalism hasn’t gone away. It’s grown.
People deserve to understand not just what is happening but why it matters.
They deserve reporting that is fair, accurate and grounded in reality, without partisan slant or unnecessary noise.
They also deserve a platform that listens.
That’s what Barrenside is here to be.
A personal ask
Good journalism takes time, effort and resources.
I’m committed to keeping essential public-interest reporting free, because access to important information shouldn’t come with a barrier.
But deeper reporting, the kind that answers difficult questions, investigates complex issues and brings clarity to complicated situations, requires more.
If you believe in that kind of work, I ask you to consider supporting Barrenside as a patron. Your support helps keep this platform free to read while expanding access to reliable information across our region and state.
I’ve created three tiers at different price points so you can choose what level of support works for you.
Your support won’t just fund a news site. It will help build a stronger, more informed and more connected community.
Why this matters to me
I was born and raised in Barren County. My family’s roots here go back more than 200 years. South Central Kentucky is home.
While many journalists leave rural communities for larger markets, I’ve made the decision to invest my work right here. Who better to tell our story than us?
Places like this deserve strong journalism, thoughtful storytelling and meaningful engagement just as much as any major city.
Barrenside is the result of more than a year of planning and a lifetime of connection to this place.
I didn’t set out to start a business. But I did set out to do meaningful work.
And this is where that led.
Thank you for being here, for reading and for being part of what comes next.
