GLASGOW, Ky. — With the Fourth of July holiday approaching, Glasgow officials are reminding residents about local fireworks rules and encouraging everyone to celebrate safely.

Under the city's consumer fireworks ordinance, fireworks may be used from noon to 11 p.m. on July 4. Fireworks are also allowed from noon to 10 p.m. on June 28 through July 3 and on July 5.

The Glasgow Police Department is encouraging residents to attend public fireworks displays when possible, supervise children around fireworks, keep a safe distance before and after lighting fireworks, and use proper safety equipment.

Pet owners are also encouraged to keep animals in a secure and comfortable place during fireworks displays, as loud noises can cause stress and anxiety.

Anyone wishing to use fireworks outside the approved hours must obtain a permit from the Glasgow Fire Department chief. Permit applications must be submitted at least 15 days before the proposed use.

City code also requires fireworks to be discharged at least 200 feet away from any structure, vehicle or other person.

Violating the ordinance can result in fines. A first offense may carry a fine of up to $50. Second and third offenses may result in fines of up to $100 and $200. A fourth or later violation may be charged as a misdemeanor and carry a fine of up to $500 and up to 10 days in jail.

Fireworks are also permitted from 11:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve until 12:30 a.m. on New Year's Day.
