GLASGOW, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear will make stops in Glasgow and Hopkinsville Tuesday, including a visit to the Barren County Family YMCA for the grand opening of its new senior center.

Beshear is scheduled to join Barren County and Glasgow officials at 11 a.m. Tuesday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the YMCA, located at 1 YMCA Way.

The nearly 3,000-square-foot senior center was built with a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant and is designed to provide wellness, nutrition and activity programs for older adults.

The center is open to everyone in the community, not just YMCA members.

Programs include fitness classes, daily meals, art classes and community education, all of which will be free to participants.

The Barren River Area Development District helped the YMCA secure the federal grant, which was administered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The City of Glasgow and YMCA partnered on the application.

The YMCA also contributed $75,000 from a private donation, while its board raised another $150,000 for the project.

Beshear’s Glasgow visit comes less than a month after U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie toured the new center Aug. 18.

During that visit, Guthrie spoke with community members and toured the new wing as a chair yoga class was wrapping up.

Tara Bailey, CEO of the Barren County Family YMCA, said the facility is intended to serve seniors throughout Barren County and surrounding communities.

“This is going to be a true senior center for Barren County and surrounding areas,” Bailey said. “It’s not just space for the YMCA. It’s open to everything.”

Beshear’s other Tuesday stop

After leaving Glasgow, Beshear is scheduled to travel to Hopkinsville for a 2 p.m. groundbreaking at the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. manufacturing facility.

Beshear will join company President and CEO Michael Brace for the groundbreaking ceremony marking an expansion of the facility.

The governor’s office listed both events as part of Beshear’s Tuesday itinerary.
