Glasgow intersection to shift to all-way stop during study

Preliminary traffic data shows volumes at the intersection may no longer meet federal guidelines for a signal, prompting the review, according to the transportation cabinet.

GLASGOW, Ky. — The intersection of Race Street and Front Street will shift to an all-way stop beginning April 28 as part of a traffic study, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Transportation officials said the existing traffic signal will be set to flashing red in all directions Tuesday, requiring drivers to stop at the intersection for a 90-day evaluation period. Crews will install additional “Stop Ahead” signs and message boards to warn motorists of the change.

The study will assess the most efficient way to manage traffic at the intersection while maintaining safety, the cabinet said.

Engineers routinely evaluate intersections when conditions change to determine the most appropriate traffic control. At Race and Front streets, utility crews are relocating lines to new poles, which will require the signal equipment to be moved.

The intersection will operate as an all-way stop for at least three months while engineers collect and analyze data.

Afterward, officials will decide whether to keep the signal or permanently convert the intersection to a four-way stop.

If a signal is deemed necessary, a full reconstruction of the system would be required.
