LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A major stretch of Interstate 65 in Louisville will close for two months beginning June 1 as crews replace three aging bridges along I-65.

The closure will impact a five-mile section of I-65 between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and downtown Louisville (Jefferson Street) and is expected to remain in place through July 31.

Through traffic will be detoured to I-264, with additional local ramp and street impacts expected throughout the closure period, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Transportation officials say the project will allow accelerated replacement of bridges over Kentucky Street, Hill Street/CSX Railroad, and Bradley Avenue, all originally built in the late 1950s and now at the end of their service life.

The new structures are designed to last for 75 years, with work intended to improve long-term safety and reliability along the corridor.

Officials add that while a portion of southbound I-65 is expected to reopen earlier, full reopening of the corridor is scheduled for Aug. 1, with additional construction work and related traffic impacts continuing beyond the summer closure period.
