The dispute stems from a series of zoning discussions this spring over how data centers should be regulated within city limits.
He said both the state and local governments have “dropped the ball” by not being transparent with the public as they were learning more about these data center developments.
Kentucky’s utilities have reported as many as 30 data centers are looking at setting up shop in the state with a potentially enormous power demand when added together.
In Barren County, the Cave City city council advanced this month a temporary ban on data center developments after locals had been approached by developers.
Over the next year, the city council plans to research the issue and gather community input on data centers, with plans underway to form a committee to study the issue further.
Audience members shouted that the moratorium was only a temporary fix, calling for an outright ban on all data centers.
If adopted, the Cave City moratorium would pause new applications for zoning and building approvals related to data centers until studies and ordinance updates are completed.
Barren County has no countywide zoning system, limiting its ability to regulate large-scale industrial development such as data centers.
